Nipple Care : Sore Nipples

An estimated 70% of women in Australia, breastfeed for up to three months. Natural as breastfeeding is, some women experience difficulties during the first few weeks. The most frequent discomfort is sore nipples, which often leads to premature weaning. It is essential to find relief while investigating the cause of the problem so that the breastfeeding relationship can continue.

There are a number of reasons why breastfeeding women experience sore and cracked nipples:

Incorrect position of baby at the breast

Incorrect attachment of baby at the breast

Infant with strong clench

Nipple Thrush – severe, burning nipple pain for the entire breastfeed.     Correct latch on does not alter the pain. There may be shooting or radiating pain throughout the breast. The baby may also develop thrush in the mouth or on the buttocks

Breast engorgement. This is when the breasts are hard, swollen and painful because they are full

Wearing ill-fitted bras or under-wired bras

Wearing clothing that constricts the breast tissue

Pulling the baby off the breast to break the suction

Not drying the nipple thoroughly after each feed

Not changing breast pads frequently
